Clayton was built on a road cut by Governor Tryon's troops in 1770 as they marched north from New Bern to Hillsborough against the Regulators. A century later, the railroad came through and gave the settlement its first name - Stallings' Station, since the railroad depot was in the home of Mrs. Sarah Stallings. In 1869, the town was incorporated as Clayton, which is located mostly in Johnston County, with a small portion extending into Wake County, North Carolina.
