The town of Cornelius was founded in 1893, primarily as a cotton mill town, and named for Joseph Benjamin Cornelius, who was the primary investor in a cotton mill where raw cotton could be converted into cloth. With the closing of the town's mill, the Catawba River was dammed to create Lake Norman, providing the area with recreational opportunities and electrical power.
