Ellerbe is a town in Richmond County, North Carolina, noted for its peaches. Its origins began in 1781, when a road was built from General Nathaniel Greene’s encampment at Hick’s Creek, South Carolina to Guilford Courthouse. The road intersected with a previously built road, and people began to meet at the crossroads to trade and socialize. First known as Hurricane, the community then became known as Fairgrounds, before taking its name from Colonel Ellerbe when it was incorporated in 1911.
