Farmville is in Pitt County, about eight miles west of Greenville, in the North Carolina Inner Banks region. First settled in the mid-1760s, the community was primarily agricultural, and the first recorded structure within the town limits was a log cabin built about 1840. The settlement was generally referred to as New Town until 1872, when the town was incorporated as Farmville.
