Originally, the unincorporated town was known as Burnt Chimney, serving as a crossroads on the Shelby-Rutherfordton and Spartanburg-Lincolnton roads. Its name was changed to Forest City in 1887, for a prominent citizen, Forest Davis. The town is situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains of North Carolina, within Rutherford County. Forest City is southeast of Rutherfordton.
