Garysburg, North Carolina is located in Northampton County. A settlement just south of the town’s current position, near the banks of the Roanoke River, was known as Peeples Town, and sometimes referred to as Tavern. Named for Roderick B. Gary, the town was named Garysburgh in 1838, which was changed to Garysburg in 1892. During the 1840s, the site along the river was largely abandoned, and people settled in a new site, not far away, which is the current location of Garysburg.
