Hayesville is the county seat of Clay County, North Carolina. Hayesville was established on the site of the former Cherokee town of Quanasee, which lay along the Trading Path, a road that led from Quanassee west to present-day Murphy, North Carolina. The Hiwassee River flows along the outskirts of the town. Incorporated in 1913, Hayesville was named for George Hayes, who introduced legislation separating Cherokee County to form Clay County.
