Highlands is a seasonal resort town in southeastern Macon County, North Carolina, situated on a plateau in the southern Appalachian Mountains, within the Nantahala National Forest. A small portion of the town extends into southwestern Jackson County. Highlands was founded in 1875 by Samuel Truman Kelsey and Clinton Carter Hutchinson. The community became a golfing mecca in the 1930s, when Bobby Jones and others founded the Highlands Country Club.
