Hot Springs, North Carolina is situated at the confluence of the French Broad River and Spring Creek, in Madison County. The community grew up around a natural hot spring, and has been a resort destination since the early 1800s. The town was originally known as Warm Springs, until a higher-temperature spring was discovered in 1886, prompting a change in the community’s name to Hot Springs.
