The city of Jacksonville, North Carolina is the county seat of Onslow County. Its history goes back to the end of the Tuscarora wars in 1713, when the forced removal of Native American tribes opened the region to permanent settlement. In 1752, a hurricane destroyed the county seat in Johnston, after which Jacksonville was chosen as the site of the new courthouse. For a time, the settlement was known as Onslow Courthouse, renamed Jacksonville when it was incorporated in 1842.
