Lincolnton was established as the seat of Lincoln County in 1785, laid out with a central courthouse surrounded by a grid of streets, blocks, and lots, dividing the town into quadrants. The city was named for General Benjamin Lincoln, who served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.
