Southern Pines, in Moore County, was founded by John Patrick, at a place then known as Shaw's Ridge. He called it Vineland, but soon changed the name to Southern Pines. In the early days of the community, West Southern Pines was an incorporated African-American town, but the two communities merged in 1931.
