Wilmington, North Carolina is the seat of New Hanover County. The city is located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Cape Fear River. European presence in the area dates back to the early half of the 16th century, but the area was not settled until the 1720s. Wilmington was founded in 1739, and named for Spencer Compton, the Earl of Wilmington, who was prime minister under King George II.
