In 1880, Amos Graves Cox moved to a log cabin near what is now the road to Renston, where he cleared land and eventually built a home, a store, and later a factory. Sometime around 1890, the Atlantic Coastline Railroad extended its line through the area, and a town grew up around the two concerns. Winterville was incorporated in 1897, and is part of Pitt County, North Carolina.
