Named for George Cass, a president of the Northern Pacific Railway, Casselton, North Dakota is in Cass County. Casselton was settled in 1873, when the railroad sent Mike Smith to plant trees there to serve as a windbreak. Others soon settled in the area, and the town was incorporated in 1880. In its early years, the settlement was known as The Nursery, Goose Creek, and Swan Creek, until a railroad station was built there. Casselton is located north of I-94, north of Everest.
