Founded in 1880, Fort Ransom is a small city in Ransom County, North Dakota. The community stemmed from the Fort Ransom Military Post, which was built in 1867 to protect settlers and railroad workers who were working on the Northern Pacific Railroad between Fargo and Bismarck. The city was named for Major General Thomas E.G. Ransom, a Civil War veteran. Dismantled in 1872, the fort was located southwest of the town. Fort Ransom is northwest of Lisbon.
