Grafton, North Dakota is the seat of Walsh County, and the center of the Red River Valley. The first settlements in the area were in 1878, when O.T. Gorder and M. Christianson claimed land on the north side of Park River. That same year, Thomas E. Cooper and his family took up residence in the area, building the first structure on the Grafton site, naming the community, and securing a post office. Grafton was incorporated in 1882, becoming a city the following year.
