Hankinson is located in the center of southern Richland County, in southeastern North Dakota. The community was settled in 1886, with most of its early immigrants being German, and named for its founder, Colonel R.H. Hankinson. The area around Hankinson was well settled before the town came into being, as the coming of the railroad in the 1870s brought people to the region. Due to a threatened battle between two competing railroads, the town was often referred to as Fort Hankinson
