Kenmare is in Ward County, North Dakota. Founded in 1897, when the town’s first post office was opened, Kenmare was settled mostly by Scandinavians attracted by the availability of homesteading land. Kenmare is believed to have been named by the daughter of a Soo Line Railroad official for Kenmare, County Kerry, Ireland. The city is situated on the northeastern shore of Middle des Lacs Lake, about fifty miles northwest of Minot.
