Named for George W. Lynn, the city of Linton was founded in 1898, and incorporated as a village in 1906, becoming a city in 1914. The community was created as a result of a political dispute between residents of the northern and southern parts of Emmons County, which resulted in the creation of Linton as a more central location for the county seat.
