Platted in 1906, Max, North Dakota was established in large part due to a rumor that the Soo Line was building north of Garrison by Elbow Creek. The town was supposed to be named Junction or Junction City, where the Soo Line tracks from the south branched to the east and west, however it was named Max, for the first name of the oldest son of the town’s first postmaster, as the young boy was so often there to greet people when they came for their mail. The city was incorporated in 1947.
