New Leipzig, North Dakota is in Grant County. Like many other North Dakota towns, New Leipzig had its origins in the railroad. In 1910, a town was planned by the Milwaukee Land Company of Chicago. Wanting to be nearer to the railroad, the German-Russian residents of nearby Leipzig moved there and, when a post office was established, it was called New Leipzig. In 1912, the town was renamed Lawther, after a local landowner, but resident protests led to its name being changed back to New Leipzig.
