Pembina, North Dakota is located just south of the Canadian border, with I-29 passing on its west side, leading to the Canadian border at Emerson, Manitoba, and south to Grand Forks. At the time of the 16th century French explorations, the area was inhabited by the Lakota, the Chippewa, and the Assiniboine. The Hudson Bay Company established a fur-trading post there in 1797, making it the oldest European community in the Dakotas. Until 1823, Pembina was thought to be in Canadian territory.
