Riverdale, in McLean County, North Dakota, was established as a construction camp during the building of the Garrison Dam in 1946, and was operated by the federal government from its founding until 1986, when it was turned over to the state, and incorporated soon afterwards. When the dam was completed in 1953, many residents of other camps, including Dakota City and Big Bend, decided to stay on and relocated to Riverdale. The city is situated on the bluffs overlooking Lake Sakakawea.
