Stanton is the county seat of Mercer County, North Dakota. The community was founded by Thomas and James McGrath, who established a post office there in December of 1882. The town was established in 1883, becoming the county seat when Mercer County was organized in 1884. Stanton was incorporated as a village in 1909, becoming a city in 1947.
