Founded in 1900, Surrey was named by Great Northern Railway officials, making it one of several sites along the Great Northern transcontinental route between Devils Lake and Minot that were named after places in England. In 1910, Surrey was the point at which the transcontinental route was shortened, proceeding diagonally from Fargo to Surrey, which became known as the Surrey Cutoff. Surrey was incorporated in 1951, and is in Ward County, North Dakota.
