Tioga, in Williams County, North Dakota, was founded in 1902, and named for the New York home town of many of its early settlers. Like many North Dakota communities, Tioga was established along the Great Northern Railroad. One of its first buildings was a railroad section house. In 1951, oil was discovered on the Clarence Iverson farm in Tioga, setting off an oil boom.
