Underwood, in McLean County, North Dakota, was founded along a Soo Line Railroad line between Bismarck and Max in 1903, and named for Fred D. Underwood, who was vice president of the railroad at the time. Its early settlers were enticed into the area for free land under the Homestead Act of 1862, many of them Germans from Russia, and others from areas that would later be known as South Dakota, Minnesota and Canada.
