Wahpeton is the seat of Richland County, North Dakota. Although the area was explored by Jonathan Carver in 1767, it was more than a hundred more years before the area was settled, for the most part settlers from Wisconsin. The first settler was Morgan T. Rich, who began farming the area in 1869. As more settlers arrived, the community became known as Richville. Its name was changed to Chahinkapa when its post office was established, and renamed Wahpeton two years later.
