Walhalla is situated on the banks of the Pembina River in Pembina County, five miles from the Canadian border. The community was founded in 1845, making it the second oldest town in North Dakota. Walhalla was an outgrowth of the fur trade in the Red River Valley, with several early trading posts located within or just outside of the community, including the Kittson Trading Post, which began operations in town in 1843, and which is known as the oldest building in North Dakota.
