Watford City is the seat of McKenzie County, North Dakota. The Northern Land and Townsite Company, a division of the Great Northern, platted the town and sold lots in 1914, with many of its early businesses and homes relocating from Schafer, the former county seat, which eventually became a ghost town. The community was incorporated as Watford in 1915, adding “City” to its name a year later.
