Arcanum is in Darke County, Ohio. The first settler in the area was William Gunder, who came in 1816, camping southwest of the current townsite near a tributary of Miller’s Fork, purchasing the land in 1820. In 1848, he requested that a town be platted from his wooded area, choosing the name Arcanum, which means secret or hidden in Latin.
