Avon Lake is a city in northeast Lorain County, Ohio. The area was part of Indian Territory until the defeat of Tecumseh at Tippecanoe in 1811, and the victory of Oliver Hazard Perry on Lake Erie in 1813. The area’s first American settlers came in 1814, and the area became known as Avon Township. In 1911, residents of the northern part of Avon Township voted to incorporate as Avon Lake, while the remaining part of the township became the Village of Avon in 1917.
