The city of Chillicothe, twice the capital of the state of Ohio, is the county seat of Ross County. It is named after the Shawnee word “chalahgawtha,” meaning “principal town.” Chillicothe was the capital of Ohio from its statehood in 1803 until 1810 when Zanesville as part of a compromise which was undertaken in order to pass a bill. In 1812, the legislature once again made Chillicothe the capital, and it remained such until 1816 when Columbus became the capital.
