The Ohio city of Mansfield is the county seat of Richland County and is situated in the western foothills of the Allegheny Plateau. First settled in 1708, it was named in honor of the United States Surveyor General Jared Mansfield, who directed the planning of the settlement. During the War of 1812, the first courthouse, jail, and church were located in the blockhouses in the middle of town. The railroads came to Mansfield in 1846, and the city owes its growth, in large part, to that fact.
