Established in 1788, Marietta was the first permanent American settlement of the United States in the Northwest Territory, and the seat of Washington County, Ohio. Marietta is situated at the mouth of the Muskingum River, at the confluence of the Ohio and Muskingum rivers in southeastern Ohio. The city was named for Marie Antoinette, the Queen of France, who had assisted the Colonies in their battle for independence from Great Britain.
