Shaker Heights, Ohio is an inner-ring suburb of Cleveland, abutting the larger city’s eastern limits. The North Union Shakers sect, settled the area in 1822, calling their community the Valley of God’s Pleasure. By the late 19th century, the movement had faded and, in 1905, developers turned it into a planned residential suburb with two rapid transit lines connecting the community with downtown Cleveland. Shaker Village was incorporated in 1912, becoming the City of Shaker Heights in 1931.
