Wintersville, Ohio is a village in Jefferson County. The first settlers came to the community in the early 1800s, many of whom were Protestant Irish, as well as Scottish, French Huguenots, Welsh and Germans. Wintersville was laid out in 1831 by John Winters, for whom it was named. During Morgan’s Raid, a decisive victory for the Union during the American Civil War in 1863, Confederate General John Hunt Morgan traveled through the area on the way to his defeat a the Battle of Salineville.
