Anadarko is the seat of Caddo County, Oklahoma. Its name came from the Nadarko Indians, a branch of the Caddo; the first letter of the city's name was added by a clerical error. Anadarko's origins are in the 1878 consolidation of the Fort Sill Indian Agency and the Wichita Agency on the south side of the Washita River. The city came into existence as a part of the Land Lottery Bill of 1901, which opened land within the city up for settlement.
