Atoka is the seat of Atoka County, Oklahoma. The city was named for Captain Atoka, a leader of the Choctaw Nation and a signer of the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, which relocated the Choctaw people from Mississippi to Oklahoma in 1830. Shortly after its establishment in 1867, Atoka supplanted the dying town of Boggy Depot as the chief city in the county.
