Established as a railroad town in 1872, the community was first known as Cale, for George W. Cale, a railroad official. In 1889, the town voted to rename the town Sterrett, but railroad officials refused to accept the name change, referring to its station as Cale Switch or Cale. In 1910, the town accepted the name Calera as a compromise. Calera is located in Bryan County, Oklahoma.
