Originally a railroad crossing known as Washita Junction, Clinton was established in 1903. Residents of Arapaho, four miles south, suit to prevent Clinton's development, and the new town was named for Clinton Irwin, the judge who ruled in favor of the town. Clinton, Oklahoma is in both Custer and Washita counties.
