Coalgate is the seat of Coal County, Oklahoma. The community was originally part of the Pushmataha District of the Choctaw Nation, and was known as Liddle, named for William Liddle, a coal superintendent. Its name was changed to Coalgate in 1890, adapted from the steel gate, or coal gate, that separated the trains from the coal mines north of town. Coalgate was incorporated under that name in 1898.
