The origins of Edmond, Oklahoma were with the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, which established a water and coaling station there in 1887, which was named for Edmond Burdick, a railroad freight agent. Edmond is credited with several firsts in Oklahoma Territory, including the first church building, the first public schoolhouse, and the oldest continuous newspaper, the Edmond Sun.
