Situated in the center of the county, El Reno is the seat of Canadian County, Oklahoma. The eastern part of El Reno was opened for settlement in 1889, while the western section was included in 1892. El Reno was founded shortly after the 1889 land run, with its post office opened that same year. Its name was taken, in part, from the nearby military post of Fort Reno.
