Guymon is the government seat of Texas County, in the Oklahoma Panhandle. When the railroad laid tracks through the region in 1902, a rail stop known as the Sanford Switch was planned. Even prior to that, a town was planned for the location, and a post office was designated for Sanford in 1901, which was renamed Guymon less than a month later, for Edward T. Guymon, president of the townsite company. The town was incorporated in 1904.
