Located in western Carter County, Healdton was originally called Mason, for its founder, Elisha Mason. Its post office was established under that name in 1883. Mason was renamed Healdton in 1888, in honor of Charles H. Heald, who settled the community and became its first postmaster in 1897. Before Oklahoma became a state, Healdton was in Pickens County in the Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory.
