Holdenville is the seat of Hughes County, Oklahoma. Originally part of the Creek Nation, Indian Territory, the settlement was first known as Echo, which was changed to Fentress when a post office was established in 1895. Later that same year, the town was renamed Holdenville, in honor of J.F. Holden, a railroad official. Holdenville was incorporated in 1898.
