Kaw City is in Kay County, Oklahoma. Named for the Kanza Indians, called Kaw by locals, the city was founded in 1902, although the original townsite is now covered by the waters of Kaw Lake, created when the Army Corps of Engineers constructed Kaw Dam on the Arkansas River in the late 1960s. The new site is next to the lake, on high ground.
