Named for John Mercer Langston, an African-American teacher and U.S. congressman from Virginia, Langston is one of two surviving historically black towns that began in Oklahoma Territory, before Oklahoma began a state. E.P. McCabe, a black man, and Charles Robbins, a white man, founded the town in 1890 and platted it the following year. It is the home of Langston University.
